Growing up in South Florida, Cuba has always been a source of fascination to me. I’d see stories on the news of refugees washing ashore. I knew people tried to escape it and people diaspora desperate to see their loved ones couldn’t get in. Like a DPRK 90 miles away.
When a work opportunity arose that would allow me to go, I volunteered.
I travelled light—no electronics, so that meant only my trusty Nikon F3. Given what I knew about the decrepitude of Cuba, I thought Harmon Phoenix was the best film choice. And for this trip I only packed one lens—a cheap Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 AIS pancake lens.
