In over a decade of regular travel to Africa, I never had the itch to do a safari type activity. There’s something that feels wrong about that type of eco-tourism to me, and my mentality has been that I can get a better view of these animals back at home at the zoo.
But for some reason on this trip, not only did I participate in a safari, but I spontaneously organized it, and recruited a few people to go with me to keep my costs down.
I’m not a wildlife photographer by any means and don’t have the gear for it, but I had my camera with me and gave it a go with the longest lens I packed—which was a Nikkor MC 105mm f/2.8.
